Recipe of the Month: Sugar Cookies

Updated: Dec 10, 2023

Hello everyone! I’ve spent the last 2 years of my life exploring the art of baking and it has quickly become one of my favorite hobbies. I hope to bring you guys a recipe each month that is dear to me and all the tips and tricks I’ve picked up on. With that all said, let's get started!

This month we’re going to be making a personal favorite of mine, sugar cookies! These cookies are incredibly sweet and buttery snacks and desserts that I absolutely love.

Recipe:

Makes ~20 Cookies Photo by Noah Meyer

The Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 ½ cups plus 1 tablespoon of all-purpose flour

  • ¾ baking soda

  • ¾ teaspoon salt

  • ¼ teaspoon cream of tartar

  • 2 sticks of butter (Preferably at room temperature, but most of the time I lightly microwave the butter to speed up the process)

  • 1 ¾ cups of sugar, set aside another ½ cup of sugar for rolling

  • 1 egg

  • 1 egg yolk

  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

Tools You’ll Need:

  • 1 Cup measuring cup

  • ½ Cup measuring cup

  • ¼ Cup measuring cup

  • Teaspoon measurer

  • Cookie Scoop

  • Spatula

  • Stand Mixer or Big Bowl and Whisk (I understand an electric mixer isn’t always common to have so a regular whisk works just as well, just be sure to mix everything, and you’ll end up having much stronger arms than me!)

  • Sheet Pan

Directions:

  • Preheat the oven to 350 degrees

  • Beat butter on medium speed till creamy

  • Add 1 ¾ cups of sugar and beat on medium speed until light and fluffy

  • Add the egg, yolk, and vanilla and beat on medium speed untill combined

  • Add the flour, baking soda, salt, and cream of tartar and beat on low speed until just combined

  • Place ½ cup of sugar in a medium bowl

  • Form dough into small-medium sized balls and roll in the sugar until completely coveted

  • Place cookies on sheet pan

  • Bake one pan for 12-14 minutes or until the sides are set and the bottoms are light golden brown (Make sure to rotate the pan halfway through baking!)

  • Let cookies cool for 5-10 minutes and then remove from pan and let them cool completely

  • Enjoy your hard work and effort!
