What is Culture Week?

You might be asking, “what is Culture Week at Central High School and why is it important?” Culture week is an amazing celebration that we do at Central. I asked an ASBEC member, Maggie Rainey to give us a quick rundown over what this week should look like and why Culture week is important.

“So Maggie, what is culture week at Central?”

“Culture week is a really great spirit week to have, because it allows the students to express themselves in different ways. It also has so much importance, as there are often times where students cannot properly express their own cultures, due to others putting them down for dressing/acting a certain way.”

I wholeheartedly agree with Maggie's statement. It shows that culture week is fun, but important for others to represent their culture without feeling ashamed or self conscious. At Central, we encourage everyone to show off their culture in the ways they dress, act, and celebrate different things from all around the world! During culture week, Central High School shows great diversity between students, teachers, and staff. Diversity means “the state of variety.” According to Oxford Languages. This means that there is a myriad of different cultures and heritage. It is so important that we focus on these aspects to show greater respect to the students of Central and everyone around us. This week everyone celebrates their cultures in special ways, we even do dress up days!

The themes lined up for this culture week are: Monday panther gear, Tuesday olympics, (different colors according to grade, freshmen green, sophomores black, juniors blue, and seniors red), Wednesday western, Thursday Flag Day, and Friday lu’au. After school on Friday there will be a varsity football game; Central against South Albany. After the game, there will be a lu'au themed dance

All week, there will be opportunities to earn your class some points as well, like dressing up for the themes. Overall, culture week is vital to the students at Central and allows us to celebrate our differences. And remember, dress with the themes all week long!
